Greater London Authority's social media acceptable usage guidelines

The GLA uses social media to engage with Londoners on the policies, projects, reports and publications that the Mayor of London and London Assembly have responsibility for or support. Communicating through social media enables Londoners to contact their local government in a direct and meaningful way.

When engaging with the GLA via social media, you are agreeing to the following set of rules. A GLA employee will never edit a comment made by you, but your comment may be ignored (on sites including, but not limited to, Twitter) or deleted (on sites including, but not limited to, Facebook, Google+, Linkedin, Instagram) if it violates the rules set out below, or those of the relevant social media channel on which it is posted.

The GLA’s comment policy

  • The GLA’s social media channels are politically neutral. This is particularly sensitive in the run-up to an election – local, Mayoral, general or European – and we need to be mindful of how a comment may be perceived, regardless of its intention.
  • GLA reserves the right only to respond to comments made on its social media channels that are relevant to the work of the Mayor of London and London Assembly. The GLA reserves the right to remove any comments not relevant to the work of the Mayor or London Assembly.
  • Do not post messages that are unlawful, libellous, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented or racially offensive. The GLA reserves the right to remove comments of this nature immediately.
  • Do not post content copied from other sources for which you do not own the copyright.
  • Do not spam the GLA’s social media accounts.
  • Do not advertise products and services. The GLA’s social media accounts will not promote any event, product, service, company or individual whose work is not already aligned with the GLA’s work.
  • Do not publicise your own or anyone else’s personal information.
  • Do not impersonate anyone else.

All comments are subject to the Terms of Service of the social media channel on which they are posted. Information shared with or posted on any official GLA social media channel may be used by the social media channel for its own purposes. For more information, please consult the social media channel’s Terms of Service.
